Pivot language

In simultaneous interpretation a pivot language is the language used to translate between all other languages. E.g. a Japanese speaker is interpreted into French first and then all interpreters in other booths interpret the French into their languages instead of directly from Japanese. In this example, French is a pivot language. It is usually recommended to use direct interpretation and minimize the use of pivot languages.
